Conferencing

Mon, 2005-05-23 22:02

I'm here in Snowbird this week for the SIAM Dynamical Systems conference. I'm giving my talk in about two hours and it looks like it's all ready to go. If you want to see a cool (and large) movie to give you a flavor of what my research is like, check this out.

Water Falls

Fri, 2005-05-20 22:02

We went camping with Cynthia and Jason last weekend in the mountains of Western North Carolina, near Spruce Pine

Hiking to the waterfall

Here we are hiking down to a beautiful waterfall on Sunday in the rain. It was a bit of a wet weekend, but a really fun time.

Now I'm off to Utah for a week and then Boulder after that. Perhaps I will update some whil I'm travelling...

Small program ideas

Wed, 2005-05-18 22:02

For my reference and for yours if you would like to steal my ideas and make them happen so that I wouldn't have to worry about writing them myself.

  • A Python/PyObjC new IMAP mail checker that can sit in the menu bar.
  • A way to embed movies into prosper slides. (Note This is probably not a small project.)
  • A Python version of find(1) for the Subversion filesystem using their bindings.
  • An improved auto-updating PDF viewer native to OS X. This is a stopgap measure because Apple's Preview doesn't automatically update when a file has changed on disk. Some start on this has been accomplished here. I've got a version that I've been modifying. I'll see about releasing it to the public eventually.

More Cats, Less Time

Thu, 2005-05-05 22:02

Things are getting busy here, with my upcoming trip to Utah for a conference and needing to get a paper and a talk finished before then. So maybe I will play around with my blog a little less for the next couple of weeks (hopefully, for my sake). But since it is Friday, here's a picture of Dinah, since last week's pic was of Monty:

Blog Infrastructure

Wed, 2005-05-04 22:02

"Blog infrastructure" sounds like something that could potentially get rotten if you forgot to empty it out every once in a while. But really, it is something that just keeps getting better and better. I enabled comments in the blog so now we can find out if anyone but me is reading this. I am definitely reading this and so I will post a comment right here. If you are reading this, then you should leave a comment as well and we can all have a little party at the end of the post.

Additionally, I set up Trackback, but I'm not sure if it works yet, since I don't have another blog to refer to this one with, but if you want to try it, be my guest. Or if you don't know what it is, then you should not be put off by the little "TB" down there.

Bareness is the Theme

Sat, 2005-04-30 21:59

Today started pretty lazy, but rapidly got pretty smokin'! After a long morning napping into the afternoon and a slow lunch, I finally got a chance to work in the garden clearing out the weeds that had come up since the beginning of spring. It went pretty fast because it had just rained yesterday and so the ground was nice and pliable. I finished clearing half the garden, and now it is just sitting there waiting to be put to use.

Then, on my brother's example and with the arrival of summer, I decided to shave my head. I'm quite pleased with the result. It's like the old me has returned out from under all of the hair.

In other news, Lara and her mom went strawberry picking yesterday and they are delicious! But not as good as the banana pudding that we had for dessert.

Being kicked by your baby is about the best thing in the whole wide world.

PyMu

Tue, 2005-04-26 21:58

PyMu is going to be a music player similar to Muine. It is for MacOSX and implemented using PyObjC. I currently have a working version, but I need to get some things cleaned up before I can make a first public release.
